Ireland is still in the middle of a public health emergency. People are being urged to wear masks in public, social distance and to work from home where possible.
Under the Covid emergency powers introduced in March, rent increases and evictions were banned in order to protect public health. This had the effect of substantially reducing the number of people presenting as homeless, keeping people in their home during the public health crisis.
We are opening back up slowly but the rent freeze and eviction ban is due to be lifted on August 1st.
We know prior to the crisis most people becoming homeless were living in the private rented sector. With a possible second wave it would be unconscionable for people to be evicted from their home because of an untested legal opinion from the government.
Renters need certainty and security of tenure as we face into the next few months, no one should have to worry about be losing their home in the middle of the biggest public health crisis for a generation.
